Restaurant Venda da Donna Maria, Funchal Madeira 2013

Restaurant Venda da Donna Maria in the old town of Funchal has nice interior of the past century. The staff is friendly and atmosphere cozy. The restaurant is specialized in regional cuisine and home cooking.

There were a few tables in the street outside of the restaurant. Because of a nice and warm evening we chose the table there. On top of the street there were lights and flower decorations which gave nice Portugese feeling for the restaurant. The style of the whole restaurant was kind of funny. Old fashion tablecloths and dishes, and waitress wearing a funny hat. The restaurant fits perfectly to its location in the narrow old street next to the art gallery. We were able to see the art on the street while we were eating.

After we had ordered drinks they brought us some complimentary appertizers on the table. Thin and crispy slices of potato skins with salt and oregano, and warm garlic bread. So good!

Fish of the day with white wine and garlic sauce was delicious. Maybe a little bit too salty but still good. On the side there were boiled wegetables and grilled potatoes. The size of the dish was so big that it would have been impossible to eat all that food!

The other main course was Ribs. They were good but the spicy glaze that we have used to get with ribs was missing. The taste was more like cooked meat instead of grilled meat. On the menu it was described that ribs are made in a special way. We got what we ordered : ) On the side there were sliced potatoes and again so much that we couldn’t eat that all.

Restaurant was more busy than others in the same street so it must have good reputation. Prices for the main courses were around 10€ – 20€. Our bill was all together less than 40€ and it included drinks and espressos as well.
The restaurant has its own facebook pages and recommendations on Tripadvisor.

3,5-stars visit.
